These guys are truly professional. Bryan and Joe will take care of you.I seriously find it appalling that anyone had a bad experience with them.I will say this, and maybe the concern is with the consumer side of things...they WILL absolutely try to up sell you. It is your job as a consumer to tell them what your needs and expectations are. If you fail at communicating to them what you are and aren't willing to tolerate, there is no one to blame but yourself. They are only trying to stay in business, all shops try to upsell, this one just isn't shy about it. Call them out if you think they are being too aggressive, they will relax.I went in for brakes that were grabbing, and felt like they were nearing their end.Any place will do a free inspection for brakes, but not every place will show you what they see, honestly assess your needs for work to be done, and listen to what you have to say. They did try to up sell me, but they also showed me very important things on my car going forward so I could monitor the wear, etc. Since we determined it was largely a brake pedal feel issue, and not one of any specific safety concern, I did not have to spend the $250 for the rear brakes and didn't have to spend 350 for the fronts, so...I asked for an oil change, and asked what they thought about a crankcase flush, and they told me to save my money, gave some practical product advice to increase performance and charged me less for an oil change than your typical chain oil change.I was dreading this trip...because money is tighter this month than I like...but these guys are my heroes today. They didn't waste my time, they saved me some money, and they gave me realistic estimates on how long I should wait to return for the services they recommended.I am happy that I reviewed them yesterday on yelp.com before I went in for this, but I am even happier that my experience continues to be a rewarding and comfortable one with Convoy Auto repair. These guys are very honest, and they WILL take care of you. Don't be afraid to tell them what you expect, and your minimum needs-they WILL accommodate.Very deserved 5 star rating. P.S. I am writing this review in their lobby. As I was getting settled out they came in to warn me about my radiator cap, which fell apart when they removed it..., my fault? No, not Theirs, either-just the way things happen. But it is a $10 dollar fix that I don't have a problem paying for, I asked them specifically to check my fluids, etc, and the cap fell apart, they couldnt have known it would do that. They are on their way to grab the part and put it on. I had some radiator/cooling system work done here a few months back, (which they saved me a bunch of money on over another shop), and had it been broken then, they would have replaced it then. The cap being broken, they didn't want the work they did previous to spew out as I drove home. It's an awkward thing that they realized the broken cap, but it was a responsible and fair solution to approach me about it the way they did. As I am waiting to finish up they offer the wireless code for their network, and I promptly let them know I'm yelping their company as we speak. I told them I think that they should look at their yelp ratings, and try to improve the interaction with the disgruntled customers, at least try to understand why there is a wide range of customer service inconsistencies, and that they really are a great company who should be able to use yelp to positively reinforce their marketing and presence. They agreed, and quipped: " I wish that customers were willing to tell us where we went wrong, and tell us what they believe should have happened, so we can avoid bad customer experiences (not verbatim), most of those that say they had a bad experience aren't willing to help us improve by telling us our faults" Again, 5 stars. Not a perfect shop, but good enough-the best I have dealt with in the last 10 years in San Diego. Be a good consumer for your sake, and the others that need you to be, like me and thousands upon thousands of yelpers...communicate with the businesses you do business with.
You are 100% correct on "Up Sales." We always attempt to let our customer know everything we can find on their vehicles so they, with our assistance can make informative decisions to get the best life from their cars. Many Years ago we did an Oil & Filter change on a 5 year old 75K vehicle; passed off the coolant hoses (AAA now recommends 5 Yrs / 50K replacement) 3 days later it blew a hose in Gila Bend AZ and cost $1,000 plus a 3 day stay. The customer was obviously upset and asked, "Why hoses were not noted so he could make choices." Most professional shop will do a complete inspection.
