I typically research potential auto repair shops until I am confident I have found the best one for the specific job. The a/c in my Chrysler broke in the middle of our summer heat wave and I didn't have the patience to do thorough research.I selected Convoy Auto Repair out of convenience -- location and late-night drop-off. I also tend to choose businesses with professional and clean websites. I generally don't trust a business that can't manage to put up a decent website.I called ahead in the afternoon and dropped my car off after hours. I received a call from the Service Consultant the next morning. They had located two major leaks and recommended replacing both hoses as well as installing an accumulator. The repair was estimated at $850, plus $100 for the a/c service.I was shocked at the price, but authorized them to proceed. I began to doubt myself and worried that I was being scammed. I have a background in nuclear and aeronautical engineering, but still feel like auto shops try to take advantage of the "dumb woman". I called back to halt repairs and get a second opinion, but they had already started on the repairs. I mentioned that they had terrible Yelp reviews, which was the basis of my doubt. The Service Consultant called me back about an hour later, not to discuss my car, but to direct me to their main review website, demandforce.com/b/convoy.Convoy Auto Repair has great reviews on demandforce.com, but so does every other business that uses this site. Interesting. The website claims the reviews are all certified. The businesses that use this site are allowed the opportunity to review and respond to customer reviews before they are posted. I can appreciate the need to verify reviews are from actual customers rather than competitors. The Service Consultant was very patient with me and offered to take pictures of the leaks. He also provided the used parts, nicely bagged and boxed, at my request. In the end, the pre-tax total was $908. The parts/labor split was about 40/60. The a/c check/tune-up is guaranteed for six months or 6000 miles. The repairs are guaranteed for 2 years or 20K miles.I checked with a friend who is a Service Manager for an auto shop in Monterey. She estimated the repair would cost $800-$1000. Many reviewers claim this place is overpriced, but that doesn't seem to be the case. The office and shop floor were very clean. The staff was friendly. The car was ready by 4 PM and my a/c is working great. I feel comfortable knowing that I have a 2-year guarantee.Convoy Auto Repair offers a 10% discount for military (nte $50), which is the same as a coupon that is available on their website.
