#5 - Mazda MX-5
The MX-5 may not seem like a very bold choice in a vehicle, but that’s exactly why we think it’s a solid family mover. This Mazda powered minivan is one of the more unique vehicles out there, since it’s based on the popular Mazda 3 platform, but built with families in mind. Because of it’s smaller wheelbase, tall roof and 4 doors, you get the convenience of both a minivan and a standard sedan in one economical vehicle. Since it’s been in the United States since 1989, used models are plentiful.
#4 - Crown Victoria If you’re looking for reliable power, bare-bones features and something inexpensive to maintain and purchase, you can’t go wrong with the Crown Victoria. Many of the used ones available started out life as police cars, so they’ve been driven hard, but optimally maintained and built to last. The model has been around since 1992, and with the sheer number of them out in the world, parts are easy to find.
#3 - Jeep Wrangler While it’s only held the “Wrangler” moniker since 1986, the Jeep Wrangler has been an American staple since the 1940s when its predecessor was used in WWII. Shoppers looking for something that has 4-wheel-drive, a convertible top, and serious dependability already know the Wrangler is what they’re looking for. Aftermarket and stock parts are available for nearly every year in this car’s almost 75 year run, thanks to its popularity with off-road enthusiasts.
#2 - BMW M3 There are some cars that are just dream cars for most people, and the BMW M3 hovers right between dream car and possibility. This high-performance version of BMW’s popular 3-series has been in production since 1985 and its various body styles each have their own fan following in the used marketplace, leading to some bigger variations in pricing than you might expect.
#1 - Volvo You may have noticed that we didn’t pick a specific model for the Volvo, and that’s intentional. Volvos make terrific used cars, since they tend to depreciate early on in their lifespans, leaving the used buyer with a great bargain for a later model car. The 70s and 80s model Volvos can still be seen on the road in many places, supporting the claims that they are reliable, long-lived vehicles. Over the years, Volvo has made numerous wagon models, developing a reputation as a family-friendly car.
