Are You Nervous About Driving? Here Are Some Driving Tips That Might Help You!

Are you nervous about driving? Don't worry; it happens to the best of us. Driving is a skill that requires practice, but it's also a skill that can be improved with the right attitude. If you're feeling nervous about driving, here are some tips to help you get comfortable behind the wheel—and stay safe!

Driving can be nerve-wracking for anyone, but these tips and techniques can help you feel more confident.

If you are nervous about driving, here are some tips that might help you:

  • Practice in a quiet parking lot. If you can find a quiet place without many distractions and practice your turns, braking, and other skills, it will be more accessible when driving on the road.
  • Learn (or practice) to drive in a car familiar to you. If the nerves are really high, you can ask a friend to come with you if possible. Having someone else around at all times will give them confidence during their learning process, which is excellent for everyone involved.
  • Get enough sleep. Sometimes sleeplessness can cause anxiety, which can especially cause nervousness if you’re struggling with your morning commute. Make sure to get enough sleep before going on the road because fatigue causes accidents.
  • Be mindful and take deep breaths. When we're nervous, it's common to feel like we can't even breathe. If you feel like this while driving, try taking deep breaths to calm yourself down. This is a great way to remind yourself that you're safe and in control of the situation.

When you're comfortable, try out different types of roads and highways.

After you've practiced in an area where the roads are familiar, and the traffic is slow, try out different types of roads and highways. If you have a friend or family member with a car, ask them to accompany you. You can also try driving after dark or in bad weather conditions to see how that feels.

If other drivers get upset, don't engage or respond.

You'll encounter all kinds of drivers on the road, and some may be less than respectful. Some may even be rude or aggressive. When this happens, do not engage with them—you don't need to get into an argument with someone who is already behaving badly. Instead, focus on your driving and stay safe. If you feel threatened by another driver's behavior, call 911 if you can safely pull over first so that you can talk on the phone with a dispatcher until help arrives (but only if it's safe for all involved).

Drive at a moderate speed, neither too fast nor too slow.

To drive safely, you should be comfortable with your speed. If you are uncomfortable at any speed, slow down. If you are comfortable at a certain speed, increase it by 5 mph and see how that feels. If it feels like the right speed for now, then keep driving! Those who need to go faster can always go around. Focus on your safety!

Preventative maintenance and repair can ease anxiety.
